ABOUT FIONA WARDLE
I’m a developmental biologist, research mentor, and academic leader with over 25 years’ experience across leading institutions including the University of Cambridge and King’s College London. My work spans embryonic development and disease, education innovation, and strategic leadership — with a strong focus on building inclusive environments where students and researchers can thrive.I lead a research group investigating how gene activity is controlled during early embryonic development and how its disruption contributes to cancer. My career has been supported by prestigious fellowships from the MRC and the Lister Institute, competitive grants and publications.Alongside my research, I’m passionate about how science and policy intersect — particularly in areas such as stem cell and regenerative medicine and in strengthening the UK’s STEM skills pipeline. I believe that translating scientific insight into effective policy and training pathways is essential to maintain the UK’s global leadership in innovation. And I’m currently shortlisted for the Royal Society MP–Scientist Pairing Scheme, which connects scientists with policymakers to foster evidence-informed decision-making.As the inaugural Director of the Health Sciences Doctoral Training Centre at King’s, I oversaw the training and career development of more than 1,800 PhD students. I continue to champion skills development and research careers, leading the largest Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) programme at King\'s College London, recognised with a KCLSU President’s Wreath award for contributions to student life.A confident public speaker, STEM Ambassador, and contributor to national science festivals, I enjoy making complex science accessible to diverse audiences. I’m also an experienced supervisor, curriculum designer, and examiner who brings enthusiasm and clarity to teaching and mentoring at all levels.
