ABOUT FIONA ROBINSON

I am currently Principal Metallurgist at Enoda Ltd. an innovative energy technology company. My research scope and interests include low magnetic loss high strength non-grain oriented electrical steels for EV applications and grain oriented electrical steels for power generation, transmission and distribution. I have experience of the whole product life cycle, process development, manufacturing and applications.Previously I worked as a Senior Research Fellow in Electrical Machine Design at the University of South Wales where I performed research to develop advanced materials for EV motors, electric motor design, simulation, build and performance testing. My role involved the development of materials for use in electric motors, their properties and performance (magnetic, mechanical, thermal, coatings etc.) together with design, modelling, building, and testing of electric motors. I have over 20 published research papers in the fields of advanced materials, materials characterisation, and industrial process technology. I worked in the steel industry for over 28 years in a variety of roles including RD & T, Product and Process Development and Process Technology. I spent nine years at Cogent Power Ltd developing GO and NGO electrical steel products and processes with particular emphasis on magnetic and metallurgical properties; this was where I developed my ongoing passion for soft magnetic materials, their properties, production, and applications. Fiona has expertise and experience of steel industry through process and product data analytics including external collaborations with many industrial and academic institutions. I have a BSc(Eng.) in Metallurgy and Materials Science from Imperial College, a PhD from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Liverpool, and a specialist Technology Management MBA from the Open University. I am proud to be a Fellow of the Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Materials (IOM3) and a member of two IOM3 professional committees including the Board of the Energy Materials Group (EMG). The EMG is a specialist cross cutting technical group providing a focus on the materials issues in energy supply and optimisation including all forms of energy generation and advanced materials to facilitate the electrification of transport such as materials for batteries, electric vehicles and charging infrastructure.
