About Farhan Mumtaz
Farhan Mumtaz (Senior Member, received his B.Sc. in Mathematics & Physics from Punjab University, Lahore, Pakistan, in 2006; his M.Phil. in Electronics from Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, Pakistan, in 2018; and his Ph.D. in Information and Communication Engineering from Wuhan University of Technology, China, in 2021. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in 2022 with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, Rolla, MO, USA, and has been serving as an Assistant Research Professor there since. From 2007 to 2015, Dr. Mumtaz held several leadership roles at Huawei Technologies (Pvt) Ltd. in Islamabad, Pakistan, including Plan Control Manager and Project Manager, where he managed large-scale telecom infrastructure projects focusing on high-speed optical and wireless communication systems. He has authored over 55 peer-reviewed journal articles, 18 conference papers, and filed U.S. provisional patent applications related to advanced fiber-optic sensing technologies.His research interests span fiber-optic sensing and photonic devices for extreme environments, advanced micro- and nano-fabrication techniques and materials for photonics, as well as femtosecond laser micromachining and wafer-level fabrication of optical waveguide devices. He also works extensively on fiber Bragg gratings, distributed optical fiber sensors, and optical chemical and biosensing based on fiber surface plasmon resonance and metal-organic framework sensors. Additionally, he has experience with high-speed photonic interconnects and possesses significant industry expertise in telecom, network systems, and hardware solutions. Dr. Mumtaz’s contributions have been recognized with the Senior Member distinction in 2024 and inclusion in the Top 2% of Scientists in Optoelectronics and Photonics by Stanford University and Elsevier in 2024 and 2025. He actively serves as a reviewer and guest editor for numerous prestigious journals in optics and photonics and has received multiple awards for his research and leadership.
