ABOUT FAREED FAKHOURY

I’m a protection specialist and Syria political and security analyst with over 12 years’ experience in conflict and displacement settings. My work focuses on protection, gender-based violence (GBV) and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) in emergencies, and on how governance and security dynamics shape the lives of refugees, IDPs and asylum seekers.Trained as a medical doctor with an MSc in Laboratory Medicine, an MA in Political Science & International Relations, and a Master of Public Policy (MPP) from the University of Oxford, I bridge frontline humanitarian practice with research, policy analysis and programme design. I’ve led and advised protection and GBV programmes with the UN, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), Global Communities and local NGOs across Syria, Turkey and the UK, supporting women and girls, GBV survivors and conflict-affected communities.My research and writing examine Syria’s political and security dynamics, including non-state armed groups, evolving security and intelligence structures, and their impact on humanitarian access, civilian protection and aid governance. I’m particularly interested in how security actors, local authorities and international donors interact, and what this means for access to essential services and community safety.Now based in Oxford, I continue to work with displaced communities, contribute to research on Syria, refugee protection and asylum policy, and support initiatives that connect protection practice, evidence and public debate.
