Merrihew’s Sunset Gardens is a legacy retail plant nursery and event space. Although the company was founded in 1947, it was purchased in 2021 and has been operating much like a start-up to expand into a gift shop, community space, online store, and event/music venue. As the General Counsel and Director of Operations, I advise the leaders and implement systems to support this expansion, while respecting and maintaining the integrity of the company’s brand and reputation.I negotiate, draft, and manage revenue-generating contracts with clients and partners, directly supporting sales objectives and long-term business growth. I oversee enterprise risk and compliance programs, including workers’ compensation, commercial liability, and Cal/OSHA obligations.I lead day-to-day operations across retail, e-commerce, events, and facilities, building scalable processes to improve efficiency, profitability, and customer experience. This includes developing SOPs, inventory systems, scheduling workflows, and compliance practices to ensure seamless business continuity.I manage all human resources functions—hiring, onboarding, payroll, and policy development—while also managing accounts payable and receivable to maintain accurate, timely, and transparent financial operations.Additionally, I’ve planned and executed 45+ public-facing events, handling everything from agreements and logistics to client relations and vendor management, directly contributing to new revenue streams and stronger community engagement.In this role, I\'m constantly honing my ability to scale operations in a legacy business, balancing start-up agility with long-term sustainability.
