ABOUT FAN YU

Dr. Fan Yu, who earned his Ph.D. from McGill University and has work experience at CATL & ATL, is a battery scientist specializing in fast-charging and high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), solid-state lithium-ion batteries (SSLIBs), and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs).He is currently a Research Associate with the McGill HydroMET group, actively contributing to the group\'s commercialization project focused on solid-state lithium battery and fast-charging battery technologies. He works under the supervision of Professor George P. Demopoulos — Full Professor, Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE), and former Chair of the Department of Mining and Materials Engineering (MIME). At McGill, Dr. Yu concentrated on developing fast-charging electrode materials for LIBs and SSLIBs, contributing to a project supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Strategic Partnership Grants program. Dr. Yu has received several prestigious awards in recognition of his academic excellence and research contributions, including: Fonds de recherche du Québec – Nature et technologies (FRQNT) Doctoral Research Scholarship, McGill Engineering Doctoral Award (MEDA), Annual Graduate Research Excellence Award, Graduate Excellence Fellowship, Graduate Excellence Award in Engineering, William Stewart Rugh Scholarship.His strong leadership and academic impact are also actively witnessed in volunteering for energy-storage communities, serving as:Conference Assistant for Inaugural Nobel Laureate Whittingham Symposium @247th ECS meetingCo-chair of the Outreach and Communication Committee, McGill Energy CentrePeer reviewer for Nature CommunicationsContributor and editor of Battery Report (2022, 2023, 2024, 2025), Volta FoundationPrior to his time at McGill, Dr. Yu worked as a Research & Development (R&D) engineer at Amperex Technology Limited (ATL), the parent company of Contemporary Amperex Technology Co, Limited (CATL), where he designed and manufactured high-energy-density commercial LIBs.
