Air separation units (ASUs) can be inherently safe and clean because they don\'t use catalysts, chemical reactions, or solvents. However, they can also pose safety hazards, including:Rapid oxidation: This can release a lot of energy as heat or pressure, which can be a significant safety hazard.Oxygen: Pure oxygen can come into contact with different types of equipment, and can ignite in the presence of friction, mechanical impact, or organic materials. This can lead to an explosion-like reaction that can be dangerous to nearby people.Low-boiling hydrocarbons: These can enter the cold box and block equipment.Other hazards associated with ASUs include: Interfaces between the ASU and downstream systems, Pressure excursions due to vaporizing liquids, and Oxygen enriched or deficient atmospheres.Some ways to reduce safety hazards include:Pre-purificationThis process removes moisture and carbon dioxide from the ASU plant feed air by freezing them out.Hydrocarbon adsorbersThese can reduce concentrations of atmospheric impurities, especially hydrocarbons, by adsorbing them cryogenically from the liquid-enriched oxygen stream.
