About F. Scott Hall
My current research examines the genetic basis of drug addiction and related conditions using transgenic mouse models in which specific genes have been manipulated or deleted. In recent years, in a series of papers, our group has described the role of a number of genes in the rewarding and aversive effects of drugs of abuse, such as cocaine, and how these genes may contribute to the genetic basis of drug addiction. Many of these studies have examined gene-gene interactions in ways that have not been previously addressed by direct experimental manipulation. In addition to the implications of this research for the genetic basis of addiction, it also has implications for the genetic basis of psychiatric disorders including depression, anxiety and attention deficit disorder. During my graduate work, with Prof. Trevor Robbins at Cambridge University and my postgraduate work with Dr. Markku Linnoila and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, my work focused on environmental effects, such as early social isolation, that contribute to the development of addiction and major psychiatric disorders. My long-term goals are to unite these two lines of research in order to determine the mechanism that underlie gene-environment interactions that underlie the development of addiction and other psychiatric disorders.Specialties: Behavioral pharmacology, Neurobiology, Behavioral Genetics, Animal models of mental disorders
