ABOUT EVELYNE BATAMULIZA

Ms. Batamuliza has a 20+ year career in post-conflict reconstruction, the promotion of human welfare and advancement of social reforms and economic development. She was one of the first humanitarian workers to enter Rwanda during the 1994 Genocide. She is a member of the Rwandan diaspora, born and raised in a refugee camp in Tanzania. Working for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), during and immediately after the Genocide, she played a critical role in strategically positioning the ICRC for their many post-conflict initiatives. Her efforts at ICRC contributed to thousands of non-accompanied children being reunited with their families as well as detainee registration, counselling and care. Her portfolio also included ensuring that women were supported to play a participatory role in the reconstruction, which opened the doors for them to hold strategic positions in the transition government and for Rwanda to become a model for women’s participation in governance worldwide. Ms. Batamuliza played a key role in creating a Team of Eminent Persons (TEP) in Kenya to negotiate for women’s political participation in the 2013 General Elections. The TEP also contributed to the relatively peaceful Election, in comparison to the 2007/2008 process. She was also the lead focal point and drafted both the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF 20••••18) and the subsequent UNDP Country Programme Document (CPD 20••••18) for Kenya. In 2016 Ms. Batamuliza was deployed in Central African Republic to support the elaboration of the Recovery and Peace Consolidation Strategy 2017-22 and advocated successfully for Parliament’s adoption (9 Nov. 2016) of CAR’s first-ever Gender Parity Law. Most recently, she has been deployed to provide advisory services to South Sudan, Uganda, Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands on peace and governance issues. Ms Batamuliza has served on a number of global and regional initiatives for peace and reconciliation, authored publications on Women, Peace and Security and is the recipient of several public awards, including the Royal Roads University Founders\' Award in recognition of leadership and personal development. She teaches at the Rwanda Peace Academy (RPA) and International Peace Support Training Centre (IPSTC) Kenya on subject matters including: Protection of Civilians; Conflict Analysis; Transition Justice; and Gender, Leadership and Peacebuilding Ms. Batamuliza has an MA in Human Security and Peacebuilding from Royal Roads University in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
