About Eve Klein

As an environmental psychologist, architect, and planner, I’m passionate about strengthening the design process for institutions so that they become more equitable and inclusive. Throughout my professional career, I developed an expertise in the social and psychological impact of built environments in higher education, cultural institutions, and urban environments. I’ve always pursued an innovative approach to projects by engaging multiple stakeholders in the planning process and incorporating diverse methods from the social sciences in all phases of a project—from pre-planning to experience evaluation. At NYU’s Office of Strategic Assessment, Planning & Design, I played a key role in overseeing strategic facilities planning ($1.3 billion in capital projects), space management and creation/approval of the university’s Master Plan. In my role as Board Chair of the Design Trust for Public Space, I am involved with projects that lead the way in forming partnerships between city agencies, community organizations, and private industry to bring thought, innovation, research, design, and pilot projects into New York City to make public spaces more equitable and joyful.I am a founder of the User Design Information Group, a research group in the Center for Human Environments at the Graduate Center of CUNY, and co-founder of the Social Science + Architecture Committee for the AIA NY Chapter.I’m an experienced speaker and moderator at conferences/meetings hosted by premier architecture and planning organizations, including Society for College and University Planners, Environmental Design Research Association, Center for Architecture and the AIA NY Chapter.

PSRG is a center for ethnographic research, theory, and policy that focuses on the relationship of public space to people and communities within the context of historical, social, political, and economic forces. We address local cultural and spatial resource problems and their evaluation, remediation, and revitalization through social policy, urban planning, management strategies, and environmentally-sensitive design. PSRG members include faculty and graduate students at the CUNY Graduate Center and is the nexus of international public space scholars through our monthly PSRG network events.
