Fair Trade Scotland was set up in 2006, as a WFTO mission-led Social Business, Limited By Guarantee, having no shareholders and no charitable status. We passionately believe in the 10 WFTO Fair Trade Principles - that cannot be monetised. We were Scotland\'s first WFTO Guaranteed Fair Trade Member and actively promoted the Verification System in a \'Fair Trade\' Nation, that was formed on the basis of the Fairtrade Mark. We actively promoted the System, as a driver, in promoting the Principles and Values needed to inform and educate consumers that change really is possible through Responsible Consumption. Traditionally Fair Trade has always operated in the charity/not for profit sector and to this day remains a ‘feel good’ purchase as a way to tackle Trade Injustice. Breaking traditional ties with the Charity Sector is needed, as to be sustainable you need to be profitable and therein lies the problem. Cheap has become the Norm! This means that a Sustainable Supply Chain requires consumers who are willing to pay the full cost of a product and this requires a complete system change Whilst we have decided to terminate our membership with WFTO, we will continue to promote WFTO Producer Members who really need support to access the market - especially in the UK. Our vision now is to work with companies that wish to have a genuine long term trading relationship with us so that we can build capacity for producers.
