When I tell people that I switched my major from psychology to accounting, they would comment that I did a 180. I beg to differ… While I was studying as a psychology major I was fortunate enough to work for the Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC), in the Quality Assurance Department as a Research Assistant. We did a variety of studies ranging from market research to quality control which contributed directly toward terminating non-profitable operations, process efficiencies and improvement of daily operations. The research consultant whom I worked closely with would often remind me,\"The data from our studies needs to be valid and relevant.\" He basically quoted the conceptual framework for financial accounting, good faith and relevance.These principles stayed with me as I became a supervisor for the general ledger function at Brigham Young University – Hawaii (BYUH). Using data to identify the efficiency of our controls, we were able to make improvements that would decrease amount of error that would hit the general ledger.Accounting principles set the standard in every workplace but the accounting industry is an exciting place to work and apply your knowledge as an accountant. What I enjoy most about accounting is that it is used in practically every aspect of your daily life, from your own home to corporate environments accounting is used to present the organizations financial position.
