See below for update: After 32 years as a local newspaper journalist, I\'ve concluded I like being a local newspaper journalist. If awards are any indication, I seem to be fairly good at it. But my business is in a time of extreme transition, and although I have always been a fan of evolution, the need to make mortgage payments has made this one tense to experience. It\'s no secret that the traditional newspaper business is contracting and that the industry\'s leaders are scrambling to find a way to profitability. I remain convinced of the value and need for quality journalism, particularly at the local level, but I have not remained convinced that profitability is the way to provide it. I am currently a member of an ad hoc committee of The Newspaper Guild exploring \"alternative ownership\" strategies. Certainly a great portion of this business\'s future is on the Web, but the difficulty of creating a model that generates a profit there has stymied growth. It is my belief that one way to re-establish local journalism on a solid foundation is to steer ownership toward a local non-profit foundation which can allow the \"newspaper,\" in whatever form it eventually evolves to, a continued vibrancy without the constant, frenetic drive to maintain a level of profit it can no longer sustain.
