ABOUT ERIN K. MELVIN

About a decade ago I realized that the work I do, in its essence, is problem solving. Everything I do centres around understanding my customers so that I can shape products and services to meet their needs–or solve their problems–and, hopefully, bring them at least a little bit of delight. The work I do is informed by my search for ways to best serve my customers. Over the years, this has led me through customer experience, product management, human-centred design, and systems thinking. I have three main buckets of expertise: 1. Learning Experience Design (LXD) LXD, for me, is where UX design methodology meets instructional systems design to create more learner-centric experiences that help learners receive, absorb, remember, and activate their learning. This work starts with the basic question: What is the best way for learners to reach this specific goal? Then I follow through a process using some of my favourite tried and true tools and processes:* Value Proposition Canvas * Learner Journey Map * Prototypes and Demos * Service Blueprint * Implementation Support 2. Digital Learning With a long-time interest in how we can use technology to create more impactful learning experiences, I found myself with opportunities to explore Learning Management Systems (LMS) through multiple roles leading to my final space in system implementations. I have expertise in * Moodle, Totara Learn * Learning Analytics * eCommerce 3. Facilitating Innovation and Strategy Most recently, I’ve had the opportunity to work as a consultant in the workforce development sector where I designed and facilitated sessions to solve problems, develop strategy, and implement solutions using human-centred design and systems thinking. Most of the work I did centred around creating greater equity and access for individuals with barriers to employment through creating more user-centric workforce development services and practices. Some highlights of this work were designing and facilitating the following events:* An Ideas Lab with the Future Skills Centre to develop more innovative ways to close the pay gap credentialed newcomers in Canada * A solutions table to develop an action plan to help newcomers gain support and licensing as family home care providers in Saskatchewan * A workforce development meeting for the Greater Toronto Airport Authority and 80+ airport CEOs, Human Resource leaders, and community partners to build buy in and commitment for continued work to build a sustainable future-proof workforce for Toronto Pearson Airport
