ABOUT ERIN AUSTIN-BURCHFIELD

I’m a Psychology undergraduate student at the University of Sussex with a growing interest in clinical and social psychology, particularly how psychological theory can be applied to real-world settings to support wellbeing and mental health.Alongside my degree, I’m currently completing a year-long research placement exploring social inequalities, where I’m developing skills such as participant recruitment, data collection, and analysis in R. This experience is deepening my understanding of research ethics, methodology, and psychological theory in practice.Beyond my academic work, I’m actively involved in roles that focus on supporting people and building meaningful connections. I volunteer with Whoopsadaisy, supporting children with physical and developmental disabilities. I volunteer with Shout UK as a crisis volunteer, developing skills in active listening, emotional regulation, and safeguarding. Alongside this I work with West Sussex Mind to facilitate a mindfulness colouring session. At the university I work as a widening participation ambassador to help disadvantaged groups from schools understand university is an option for them. I also volunteer as part of the Buddy Scheme at the University of Sussex, helping new students settle into university life. Lastly, I have a part-time job in a retail environment. These experiences strengthen my communication, empathy, problem-solving, and teamwork skills which are essential in clinical and mental health settings.I’m passionate about pursuing a career in Clinical Psychology and am eager to build on my academic and clinical experience through further opportunities in mental health services, assistant psychologist roles, or research.
