About Eric Svaren

With 30 years of experience in leadership development, multiparty collaboration, organizational change, team building, conflict resolution, I now focus on helping leaders contend with the increasing complexity and novel challenges they face. I specialize in working with leaders in three situations:1. Leaders who find that relying on their particular area of expertise (like operations, medicine, IT, finance, or design) is no longer enough for the challenges they face. This situation might arise when someone is promoted from an individual contributor to a manager. It also affects functional leaders facing novel, complex challenges. It is difficult to let go of mastery of one discipline and shift to leading and working with others.2. Leaders who are working across boundaries to get results face different challenges. They are pulled in too many directions and often struggle with being too busy. They are concerned with how they are perceived by their bosses, peers, and directs because those perceptions can affect their ability to deliver. These leaders have high personal standards, want to achieve objectives, and learn, but they often feel they are falling short.3. Leaders who question the “conventional wisdom.” They are seeing things differently. They may challenge or change the goals. These leaders are developing a new and unique perspective, but others may see them as “loose cannons” or mavericks. Most organizations need these new perspectives; they will help the enterprise manage greater complexity. However, others push back on these new ideas. That creates new challenges for these broader thinkers.
