About Erica W.
As a first-generation Asian college student from New York City, I had limited exposure to the technology industry. However, during high school, I was fortunate to participate in a Girls Who Code summer program where I met like-minded young women passionate about programming. It was then that I recognized the significant gender gap in tech. I am currently a Robotics Instructor at the Center for Educational Innovation, where I teach students from grades 1 to 8 how to build robots and code their movements. My experience working with students has reinforced my belief in the importance of introducing STEM-related coursework to young learners. Such exposure can help them expand their interests, deepen their understanding of technology\'s impact on our lives, and develop a logical approach to problem-solving. In pursuing inclusivity in tech, I collaborated with three others on a project called Smartbrella. This innovative umbrella allows those with disabilities to open and close it using simple sound commands and Bluetooth controls. In my spare time, I enjoy solving puzzles, playing badminton, and constructing tiny houses and book nooks, improving my focus and attentiveness.
