I start a project by reviewing the business model and system requirements with product managers or a sample of end users. This allows me to build a baseline for gap analysis as well as making pragmatic design decisions. I work with the business to negotiate a set of mutually agreed upon testable requirements using functional decomposition. This allows the business to stack rank features and understand the cost in time or scope when swapping new requirements into the project. I like to help define when we may can gain some economy of scale by switching the order features are developed in.
