About Erica Ilcyn
I was born and raised in New Jersey for the majority of my childhood until I moved to Kalamazoo, MI. Despite having a high ACE score of 8, with the support of adults, family and mentors I graduated from high school with a 3.9 GPA and proudly got accepted into Western Michigan University’s Pre-Medicine program. After 5 semesters of intensive study, I began asking myself why I was studying medicine and began a journey of self-discovery. I soon found my passion working and educating youth, providing them with opportunities to better their future through fostering characteristics of resilience in the midst of adversity. Working as a Special Education teacher and as an English teacher had me inspired and motivated to leave my legacy here on Earth and impact my community, one student at a time. I feel that I learn just as much from my students as I hope to teach them. I am passionate about helping others and truly believes in the power of voice and being heard. Through many experiences in the public school classrooms, residential facilities and alternative education settings, I continued to follow my passion of ensuring all students have an equitable opportunity to flourish within their environments. Now having the opportunity to serve Battle Creek Public Schools as the Student Services Coordinator, allows me the opportunity to help families and their students access behavioral and mental health services to meet their needs and break down barriers to success. Not only do I support students and families on accessing community based supports, I am positioned to design, implement, improve, and oversee the district’s Trauma Responsive MTSS and school wide SEL systems. I am eager to continue living out my calling and supporting as many individuals as possible the opportunity to thrive through an ecological approach.
