ABOUT ERICA AKIKO HOWARD

Editing specialties: Science; science education; conscious languageI love helping people communicate ideas that matter. I can help you with copyediting, proofreading, fact-checking, content editing, and other English-language editorial services. I am an editor and educator with 20+ years of experience in office and academic settings and the arts and >8 years as a full-time independent editor. I especially enjoy when I get to use both my environmental science background and my editorial training. My typical editing projects include scientific journal articles, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) educational materials, reports, slide decks, and event materials. I work primarily with nonfiction. I found my niche as a freelance editor after working in higher education for several years, where I taught ecology and environmental studies. I use my editorial training and my experience with academic writing to promote science literacy and to support writers and publishers in communicating important ideas and educating others. I believe in the value of conscious language. I help people and organizations produce written work that is thoughtful, accurate, and inclusive.I’m a graduate of the University of Washington Editing Certificate Program and a member of the Northwest Editors Guild (profile at https://edsguild.org/member-directory/#!biz/id/5cbfe1b6afd6916c0582fe3a), ACES: The Society for Editing, the Council of Science Editors, and the Editors of Color Database. As a lifelong learner, I continue to seek out professional development and learning opportunities—there\'s always room for growth!In the past, I\'ve been active in the performing arts as a dancer, choreographer, musician, and facilitator of artistic and creative projects. While I\'m not performing these days, I’m still interested in supporting projects that address nature and the environment through the arts, as well as work that promotes community engagement.
