About Eric McGill
My wife, Heather, and I are co-founders of Acton Academy Clovis here in California’s San Joaquin Valley. We are thrilled to serve our community and our three children. I will work alongside our guide for the Elementary Studio (ages 7-10) that will open this fall. Heather is every bit as involved in our Acton adventure while working as a nurse and anchoring our family at home.My personal mission statement is to awaken, inspire, and empower individual learners.In many ways, I have been watching, praying, and hoping for Acton Academy my whole life. I’ve dreamed of a school that truly fosters inquiry, of teachers not getting in the way and being held accountable for their performance, and of apprenticeships being harnessed to refine interests at an early age. I’ve wished there was a way to sustain excellence while doing away with the oppression of grades and standardized tests. And I’ve wondered, painfully, if there was a place for me in education despite my struggles within the current system. My heart soared when I found Acton.But as wonderful as Acton Academy is—and it is so much better than I ever dared to imagine—it is a derivative aim for me. What I really want is to be part of this learner-driven revolution. Laura & Jeff Sandefer have championed a noble cause, and I want to do my part to carry on what they started. I see this work as a means of preserving freedom.Victor Hugo once said, “Nothing else in the world…not all the armies…is so powerful as an idea whose time has come.” I can feel the potential energy of this idea. It is like kindling awaiting a spark. I’m grateful for the honor of striking the match here in Clovis.
