About Eric Luo
Senior Camera System / Imaging Engineer with a Ph.D. in Color Imaging, 8+ US patents, 20+ publications, and service on the ICC Steering Committee. I specialize in end-to-end camera systems for safety-critical applications: sensor and optics selection, ISP pipeline design and tuning, calibration, and image/video quality evaluation.I’ve spent 15+ years building and optimizing camera pipelines from simulation and lab characterization to field testing and mass production. This includes camera and SerDes (serializer/deserializer) driver development and debugging, defining camera module specs (RFI/RFQ), supporting vendor selection, driving EOL quality assessment, and leading failure analysis to root-cause field and production issues. I work across AE, AWB, HDR, low light, color, tone mapping, noise, flare, and ghosting, using objective and subjective as well as perception model–based IQ evaluation to tie image quality directly to performance for human vision and machine perception applications.I build production-grade tools in C/C++, Python, MATLAB and Linux scripts to automate tuning, analysis, and system-level testing—turning large camera datasets into clear, actionable design decisions. In short: I help teams design, tune, and ship camera systems that are robust, production-ready, and optimized for both human vision and machine perception.
Experience
Staff Camera Engineer
Apr 2024 — Present · Palo Alto, CA, US
Defined and documented the ISP tuning workflow and requirements, creating the central reference for internal teams and external vendors across all ISP tuning activities.Led ISP tuning and validation for multiple automotive camera platforms, improving color, white balance, low-light performance, tone, and image metadata mapping to meet program IQ targets.Characterized and validated camera modules and imagers (color, flare, sharpness, shading, illumination uniformity, etc.), feeding results into module design reviews, vendor reports, and production EOL specifications.Developed camera drivers and repeatable test workflows, providing quantitative metrics and golden-reference implementations for tuning, module characterization, and EOL validation.Built and now own a new camera IQ lab end-to-end—layout, equipment and chart selection, installation, calibration, and ongoing debug—delivering major infrastructure upgrades and resolving vendor design issues.
