Experience

  1. Microbiologist Chemical Engineer

    Pacific Northwest National Laboratory

Jan 1999 — Present · Richland, WA, US

I run an intensive care unit for microbes called the Microbial Cell Dynamics Laboratory (MCDL) where we use controlled cultivation to study the limits of biology, and how life works. I invent and run life-support machines for microbes to support their growth in extreme conditions. I\'ve invented 7 generations of photobioreactors, including the bioreactor that holds the record for the fastest growing phototroph (doubling time of 1.9 hours). I\'ve developed methods to adapt phototrophs for ultra-fast growth, and maximum productivity. We have developed technologies for the production of biofuels, and use the MCDL to do fundamental research on microbial physiology. We used the MCDL to discover the conditions where microbial nanowires are formed. This work has been the basis of the emerging field of Electro-microbiology. I\'m an expert in designing and operating bioreactors for the growth of microbes. I\'ve established safety protocols, mentored other staff, ensured environmental compliance, served on safety committees, obtained permits for work, handled disposal of waste, and managed projects.
