ABOUT ERIC SCHMALZ

As a young boy, I grew up on soil once part of George Washington\'s Five Farms at Mount Vernon. My father, donning his iconic Iron Brigade hat in a crisp, blue Civil War uniform, taught me countless details about the American Civil War. My mother, coming home with a smile on her face after a long day of instructing college undergraduates in early childhood education, revealed to me the sacrifice and rewards of teaching. With such a formative upbringing and a good deal of hard work, it surprised no one that I decided upon William and Mary in historic Williamsburg for my college studies. There, I pursued a growing interest in history, quickly falling in love with classes on Early Modern Europe. After completing a number of research projects and then my degree in 2010, I decided to delve into my love of educating others by enrolling at Thomas Jefferson\'s University of Virginia for my Master\'s of Teaching degree. Beginning with my student teaching placement and continuing with full-time employment, I taught social studies at Monticello High School in Albemarle County, Virginia from 20••••15. I am passionate about cultivating a love of history in the general public. Research projects in college, and fellowships at historic sites/museums such as Mount Vernon and Monticello, have provided me with the knowledge and experiences necessary to share the real world discipline of history with a wide audience. I am a very enthusiastic, dedicated, loyal, and trustworthy worker. Through my work, I have become an expert at communication, organization, and time-management. I excel at collaboration and am continually open to learning new ways to improve my practice. I always strive to help improve society through the sharing of historical knowledge that can help individuals become better citizens.
