ABOUT ENRICO TONGIORGI

My laboratory, founded in has contributed to the understanding of the role and regulation of the different splice variants of the neurotrophic factor BDNF in the process of dendrites growth and maturation during brain development. Since 2009 we started to study the mechanisms of dendritic atrophy in neuropsychiatric diseases, and neurodevelopmental disorders with intellectual disability including Rett Syndrome. In particular, we aim at discovering the signaling pathways involved in maintaining and recovering the injuried dendritic arborization. Towards this aim, we developed cell-based assays for drug screening and we have currently one drug tested in Rett syndrome patients. We also investigated serum biomarkers in neurological conditions with memory loss as tools to monitor drug efficacy. In 2008, I founded the International Master Degree in Neuroscience at University of Trieste. Since 2009 I organize for the students of the Master in Neuroscience the short intensive course \"Applied Neurosciences\" with world specialists of pharmaceutical and biotech companies working in the CNS area.
