The Western Highlands of Guatemala is one of the most climate-vulnerable regions of a country already highly impacted by natural hazards. Furthermore, the region\'s economic and social well-being is acutely affected by increasing climate-induced natural hazards. Disaster risk management (DRM), the application of policies and systems that anticipate and reduce risks from environmental and socio-economic factors, is vital for climate resilience. High rates of poverty and climate in and out-migration increase vulnerability and erode existing DRM systems. In this complicated environment fraught with climatic shocks, social vulnerabilities, and economic challenges, many barriers exist to achieving effective, integrated, and localized DRM. And yet, DRM systems are a crucial component of responding to the region\'s unique risk factors while building resilience. Through my partnership with INCEDES, the Central American Institute of Social Studies and Development, I seek to explore drivers and barriers to DRM in Guatemala\'s Western Highlands. My fieldwork will concentrate on the Mancomunidad de Municipios de Los Altos encompassing seven municipalities, many of which are intermediary cities connecting urban and rural areas. This study will combine insights from systems mapping, stakeholder interviews, and community focus groups to find linkages between institutional DRM strategies and community-based efforts in migration-prone communities. Furthermore, I will explore the bright spots of localized DRM and synthesize lessons learned for application across and beyond the region. This research will produce a story map and policy brief to inform local and regional DRM policies and facilitate the integration of effective, community-based strategies into broader resilience efforts.
