ABOUT EMMA WHITTAKER
Designer-Maker Expanded Skies Jewellery & Precious Objects. Director Ashburton Jewellery SchoolRecord of research publications: Emma Whittaker, as the Creative Industries Research Fellow for the ERDF funded Low Carbon Devon project, at University of Plymouth, researched and supported Devon’s creative and cultural sector. She instigated the Green Maker Initiative, hosted by MAKE Southwest, co-designed the Creative Commissions Programme with the ERDF Green Minds project, and is co-investigator for the AHRC Net Zero Visions project. She is co-editor of \'The Net Zero Visions Book\'(2022) and \'The Green Maker Initiative Book\'(2023). She lectures in culture, arts, media, and design. Her academic writing, published with Oxford University Press, University of Nebraska Press and Palgrave Macmillan, explores the philosophies and works of expanded narrative, belief and perception, aesthetics, and practices that engage with the Earth. Whittaker is a producer of mixed reality experiences, ‘The Cartographer’s Confession’ won the New Media Writing Prize 2017. Emma Whittaker runs Expanded Skies, Jewellery and Precious Objects After setting up the Green Maker Initiative with MAKE Southwest, to help designer makers reduce their environmental impact, and two decades of teaching and researching the arts in universities, Emma applies this knowledge in the design and creation of beautiful, sustainable and ethical objects, using recycled precious metals and ethical gemstones. She also teaches and delivers design and sustainability consultancy.
