ABOUT EMMA START

Emma Start is the Director of IP at Taiga Motors. Based in Montreal, Ms. Start is responsible for the identification and protection of intellectual property assets resulting from new product development and advanced research activities in the field of electric powersport vehicles. Emma is a seasoned IP practitioner. Before joining Taiga, Ms. Start worked for Immersion Corporation, a global leader in the development and licensing of haptic technology. While there, she was responsible for rationalizing a foundational portfolio of patent assets to be focused on revenue opportunities and business objectives. During her time at Bombardier Aviation, she was instrumental in instilling a strong internal IP culture that ensured protection of both valuable confidential information and patentable inventions. Ms. Start began her career as a patent agent for Smart & Biggar, Canada’s largest intellectual property boutique law firm. Her practice focused on preparing and prosecuting patents in the fields of transportation, consumer products, medical devices and telecommunications systems. During her time in private practice, Ms. Start worked with clients of all sizes, from start-ups to multinationals, to build and maintain patent portfolios customized to their individual business needs. Ms. Start earned a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from McGill University and is registered to practice before the Canadian Intellectual Property Office and the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
