About Emma Phillips

Emma Phillips currently works in the Latin America and Caribbean Region of the World Bank as a Sr. Disaster Risk Management (DRM) Specialist. Since joining the Bank in 2008 she has worked on DRM projects in Latin America and Africa, and at the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR). At GFDRR she led the Innovation Lab, supporting teams to use science and technology to address disaster and climate risk challenges, providing technical advice on risk assessment, risk communication, geospatial data, open source tools, and innovation. She is a founding member of the Understanding Risk Community and more recently developed GFDRR’s FY21-25 Strategy. Prior to joining the World Bank, Emma worked at the National Geographic Society and the Washington Bureaus of BBC and Al Jazeera English. A South Africa citizen, she holds a Master’s degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and an Honors degree in Italian Literature from the University of Cape Town.
