Space Intelligence is a company dedicated to increasing the ease of access to good quality information from satellite data. We help companies, NGOs and governments map land cover and land cover change quickly and easily, for example monitoring supply chain zero deforestation commitments, ensuring national parks are genuinely protected, or understanding what the biodiversity and carbon consequences will be of infrastructure development plans. We also monitor changes in the world\'s oceans and coral reefs: our big data and machine learning capabilities make most mapping and analysis tasks easy.

ABOUT ED MITCHARD

I\'m the Chief Scientist of Space Intelligence, a rapidly growing corporation that is the world\'s leading provider of nature mapping data. I founded Space Intelligence with my then-colleague at the University of Edinburgh Murray Collins in 2018 because we wanted to directly make a difference to the world\'s deforestation and nature restoration rates by providing really high quality satellite-based maps, produced using the latest AI methods and our deep ecology expertise. We have since both left the University to focus full time on Space Intelligence.Over my career I have collected forest inventory plots (diameter, height, species of trees) in 13 tropical countries, measuring over trees. I have used this data, and that collected by my colleagues, students and postdoctoral researchers, to develop new ways of mapping landcover, deforestation/degradation, forest carbon storage, and peat carbon storage. This involved developing novel data processing, machine learning and artificial intelligence methods. This work was funded by my raising over $8 million in research funding from UK research councils, the European Research Council, and the European Space Agency. I have ultimate sign off on the maps we produce, and lead the roadmap for the way we will improve our production of maps, add new products, and how we deliver our maps to clients. I am deeply involved in developing the strategy of the company, our recruitment, and managing our relationships with our investors and major customers, as well as zooming into the technical details where necessary. Specialties: developing efficient cloud-based systems to process and analyse satellite remote sensing images, machine learning/AI to extract relevant information from satellite datasets, the global carbon cycle, field ecology, community carbon sequestration projects, forest degradation, supply chain monitoring and EUDR, woody encroachment, voluntary carbon standard certification (Verra, VCS, Gold Standard, Plan Vivo).
