About Emily Ayala

Emily Ayala is an undergraduate student attending UC Berkeley. She is completing an academic degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB) with a focus on Neurobiology. She is currently an undergraduate research assistant at the Berkeley School of Public Health, where she assists with the optimization of a protocol to quantify hair cortisol as a biomarker of chronic stress. This protocol will be used to measure hair cortisol levels among participants recruited as part of the Richmond Environment and Asthma Community Health (REACH) study, which aims to examine how extrinsic and intrinsic factors contribute to asthma prevalence. The study population includes predominantly Latinx adolescents between 8-16 years old. Factors (hair care, demographics, and/or psychosocial stressors) that influence hair cortisol measurements will also be explored.
