ABOUT EMILY WAYLAND
In July 2021, I graduated from the University of Southampton with First Class Honours in Electronic Engineering (MEng). Following an interest in VLSI systems and computer architecture, I am now working as a CPU Physical Implementation Engineer at Arm.At university, I was awarded a scholarship by the UKESF, sponsored by Arm, which supported me throughout my time at university. This included a summer work placement with Arm, where I worked as a CPU Physical Implementation Intern.In Second Year, I was awarded the Eddy Herman Memorial Prize by the University of Southampton. This prize is awarded annually to a second-year student of Electronic Engineering adjudged to be outstanding in group design coursework and was judged on two group projects I was involved with.In the third year of my studies, I developed an interest in VLSI and IC design. Subsequently, I chose to study specialist digital design modules, where I learnt more about developing cell libraries and the full chip design flow. For our group project we were tasked with designing a calculator chip in SystemVerilog, which needed to communicate with a display and keypad, and synthesising/physically implementing the design using Cadence EDA tools. As my team independently investigated and implemented the chip using an alternative process (TSMC 180nm), we won this challenge and our design was selected to be manufactured. I developed essential skills including scripting for EDA tools, RTL design in SystemVerilog and communicating with chip manufacturers.Despite having to convert my bedroom into a make-shift lab and exploding one board when a faulty power-supply sent 30V through it, I achieved 78% for my Part Independent project which involved designing and building a “Miniature, Multi-purpose IoT Device for Smart Homes”. I learnt and demonstrated a wide range of skills including embedded programming, PCB Design and implementing low-power design techniques. The demonstration video can be found on the University of Southampton ECSNews YouTube Channel.(https://youtu.be/WQqUMHxonUQ)As Vice President Engagement of the Electronics and Computer Science Society (ECSS), I was responsible for overseeing the member-facing side of the committee and managing a sub-team to ensure events run smoothly. I worked with staff, students and sponsors to deliver socials and industry talks which catered to all students.
