ABOUT EMILY STONE

My career in education has been driven by a passion for equity. Teaching middle school in East Oakland in the late ‘90s was one of the experiences that kindled that in me. Most of my students struggled academically and faced barriers that made higher education difficult to attain. I wanted to do more to improve that system, so I returned to school for graduate degrees in education and human services. During my studies I became inspired by the power of the community college as a gateway into higher education for students like my middle-schoolers. I had found my calling. For over 20 years, most of them at Diablo Valley College, I have worked to support access and success for all students, including low-income, first-generation, re-entry, educationally disadvantaged students and those with disabilities.I am honored by recommendations like the following, from colleagues and students:“Emily is a leader committed to social justice and equity, able to organize people around a vision. to improve the student experience for all students.” (from my former manager) “Her ability to connect at all levels with students. employees, peers and executives is remarkable.
