ABOUT EMILY JESSICA RUGEL
As a Ph.D. researcher in environmental health, my research develops novel tools to assess exposure to health-promoting urban forms – such as natural space, neighborhood walkability, and affordable-housing programs – with the ultimate aim of developing scientific evidence that can be embedded in the urban form. Broadly exploring the intersection of health and place, my specific outcomes of interest include mental health, social interaction, and the pathway linking the two. To advance these efforts, I employ geographic information systems (GIS) and participatory research methodologies alongside more traditional tools. By developing a comprehensive model of natural spaces across metro Vancouver and applying it to health survey and prescription data during my dissertation, I supported the translation of my findings into improved sustainability plans and policies. As a Public Scholar, I also reached outside of academia by making numerous public lectures and media interviews, serving as a scientific advisor to the exhibit planners at the Museum of Vancouver, and helping draft the Healthy Built Environment Linkages Toolkit: Mental Health Considerations for Practice for dissemination to clinicians and public health practitioners. Before pursuing a Ph.D, I worked at the National Institutes of Health in a variety of research and research administration positions, including a brief appointment at the Pan American Health Organization to support the application of GIS to urban health metrics. In addition to these roles in international and federal government, I have also worked at the municipal level, creating novel platforms and tools to link San Francisco families to a wide range of resources and services. My other degrees include Master of Public Health from Portland State University and a B.A. in Journalism (magna cum laude) from New York University, but firmly believe in the acquisition of knowledge through chance encounters as well as classroom instruction.
