ABOUT EMILIA WONG GORDON
I live and work on the traditional, ancestral, unceded territory of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ speaking Musqueam people. For over 20 years, I have worked to support people and organizations who care for the most vulnerable companion animals in communities. This is my life’s work and the reason I founded Haven Veterinary Services. Yet, I believe it’s time for a paradigm shift.For too long, our work has been reactive and characterized by fear, mistrust, and saviour syndrome. We’ve often mistaken a lack of resources for a lack of love. We have failed to identify and discuss how veterinary medicine and the animal welfare sector fit into larger social systems- systems often built on oppression. It is time to ask ourselves difficult questions about how and why animals enter shelter and rescue settings, what they experience in those environments, and how they leave (and with whom). And it is time to find answers that lead us to better, more equitable, more humane practices. While this learning is a lifelong collective process, we already have some answers. I am committed to helping my clients and students implement and support evidence-based practices that improve animal health and welfare, bolster organizational effectiveness, and promote equity.
