ABOUT EM HEFFERNAN
I study how the format and presentation of information shapes attention and learning. My current research explores the attentional processes we use to scan for information and how these can be interrupted by computer-generated annotation (e.g, spellcheck!). My PhD focused on how surprising information affects our existing memories and influences future learning using a combination of behavioural studies, fMRI, and computational modelling. I completed my Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) in Electrical Engineering at Queen\'s University and my MA in cognitive neuroscience at the University of Toronto. Various internships and professional roles have given me diverse experience in industry, academic research, and nonprofit management. I am passionate about accessible STEM education and its power to enable everyone to contribute to the solutions of tomorrow.
