ABOUT EMELINA SANTOS-ILAGAN
Dr. Emelina Santos- Ilagan has been a holistic psychiatrist for almost 25 years. Alarmed by the growing number of patients who were responding poorly or unsatisfactorily to conventional treatment, in the last decade she has developed increasing interest in Functional or Integrative Medicine. In addition to reading the books and scientific articles written by best selling authors renowned Integrative Health Care practitioners, she also has attended conferences by The American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine, Primary Medine (Primed), Institute of Functional Medicine, etc. Since incorporating valuable lessons learned there, she has had renewed passion for her work that has become even more rewarding and fulfilling. She no longer merely treats her patients\' psychiatric illness/es but she coaches them towards optimal health and well being and wholeness. Her very thorough initial interview of every new patient includes review of all organ systems. Based on the information gathered, she orders applicable laboratory tests. She knows that many of those who poorly or unsatisfactorily respond to treatment of Mood or Anxiety and other behavioral disorders including AD/HD may have untreated or inadequately treated medical conditions (inflammatory, hormonal, food or environmental allergies or sensitivities and/ or gastrointestinal dysbiosis with one, combination or all of the above causing nutritional insufficiencies or deficiencies). Frequently, she detects undiagnosed or inadequately treated conditions like Hashimoto\'s Thyroiditis, nutritional deficiencies, CFIDS or SIBO.Dr. Santos-Ilagan cannot emphasize enough that symptoms of mood and anxiety disorders and other behavioral disorders like ADHD can be caused or worsened by underlying or superimposed hormonal imbalances or nutritional deficiencies, inflammatory or infectious conditions that need to be treated accordingly or adequately for satisfactory/fuller/ optimal recovery of the patients we serve.
