About Anne C. Elster
Professor Anne C. Elster is the founding leader of HPC-Lab at the Dept. of Computer Science (IDI) at the Norwegian Univ. of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway. Her research interests are in heterogeneous and parallel computing, including developing parallel programming environments that take advantage of GPU computing, including using Machine Learning to help optimize coompilers and applications for high performance computing (HPC). She is also known for Elster´s algorith, a linear bit-reversal algorithm she came up with back in 1987.She is currently also the HPC WP leader at the SFI Center for Geophysical Forecasting at NTNU.She helped found NTNU\'s Computational Science and Engineering Program and served as Co-Director until Jan. 2007 and again 2012-15. She has been the primary advisor for over 100 master students and has published and/or given over 150 technical invited talks, reviewed numerous publications and/or reports and given many invited presentations, most recently keynotes at CCGrid 2025 and ICPP (to be held in Aug 2025). She has served as an expert for several EU H2020 calls (the last one for EURO 150 million), been on an Expert Panel for research infrastructures for Sweden\'s SFI, and also served on an Expert Panel on research infrastructure for the Danish Research and Innovation Ministry where she was one of four representing sciences & engineering. Program budget: Total of DKR 600 million (ca. USD 80 million) for 20••••09. She was part of EU COST Action IC0805: Open European Network for High Performance Computing on Complex Environments where she was one of 4 Working Group Leaders, and a co-author of the proposal that lead to the NESU COST Action, which became the largest EU COST Action which included 34 COST countries, 6 Near-neighbor countries, and 6 International partner Countries (IPC), and almost 220 members. She was the NTNU PI for an EU H2020 MSCA Post Doc, and was NTNU PI of the EU H2020 R&I CloudLightning project (20••••18) where her group helped integrate HPC and Cloud computing. She was back at Univ. of Texas at Austin for her 2023/24 sabbatical, where she also was during her 20218, 2010/2011 and 2015/16 research leaves and has a renewed appointment through June 2026.
