About Elliott Ohara

I build awesome stuff - stuff that make people\'s lives better. My toolset is pretty large. I\'ve written code that was used to ensure processes where properly followed by the quality assurance teams of the Space Shuttle Main Engine so some wrench that didn\'t belong in space didn\'t end up there. I\'ve written systems that stopped hundreds of thousands of bots using stolen credentials from stealing money from customers. I\'ve architected ETL pipelines that ingested petabytes of data and translated it into personalized product offers for millions of customers. I\'ve also written software that lets a mom put a picture of her baby on a Christmas ornament. I use the experiences I gained over more than two and a half decades of writing software to help build amazing teams of people that like to build things (usually engineers). I don\'t like waste. I\'m an expert at zeroing in on it and finding ways to eliminate it. I get great joy in finding ways to make individuals work at their peak potential, making whole teams revenue generating machines. Nothing fulfills me more than watching a person do something that - a few months ago - they\'d have swore to you they couldn\'t. That\'s what I do. That\'s who I am.

1. Senior Principal Architect - Feature Engineering

   Hotel Engine is modernizing the unmanaged travel market by delivering incredible pricing to our members while developing the most intuitive travel management experience in the history of travel.Our product vision is simple: “radically simplify trip management for everyone\".I joined engine to help built product to streamline user onboarding - our Product Led Growth Team - as well as provide architectural consulting to our broader product feature teams. Since joining I\'ve:* Architected reusabile build pipelines in github actions, allowing the creation of fully ephemeral stacks for even complex systems for each pull request. This project used bash, terraform, and github actions* Built our Refer A Friend Program, allowing users to refer business and friends. This project was mostly Ruby on Rails with AWS RDS (Postgres)* Architected and built our gamification engine, enabling the team to build simple (or complex) rules to reward users (with things like travel credits) for completing desirable actions (referring a new business, booking hotels). For this project we used AWS Event Bridge, SQS, Lambda, DynamoDb, Cloudwatch, API Gateway, and Datadog* Architected and built our fraud prevention service. This service allowed the creation of arbitrary rules for various actions on our systems and returned a risk score, allowing consumers to respond appropriately, sometimes requiring step up MFA, or even totally blocking actions. This service embraced event driven, serverless architecture and used AWS EventBridge, WAF, API Gateway, Lambda, and DynamoDb* Architected and built our user-onboarding system, decoupling the onboarding of users from a legacy rails monolith that was tightly coupled to Salesforce to an event driven system responding to events from third party systems like Auth0, Salesforce and Hubspot. This service used many of the same AWS serverless services as well as Salesforce API (platform events and rest api) and Auth0 partner event bus.
