ABOUT ELLIOT BERTASI
I am a healthcare M&A and regulatory compliance attorney.I work with clients in the healthcare industry on regulatory and operational matters as well as healthcare transactions. My healthcare transactional experience includes sales, mergers and acquisitions of a variety of provider types, including hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, physician practices and behavioral health facilities. My regulatory and operational work includes advising clients on issues with complex licensing issues and compliance with federal and state anti-kickback and self-referral laws, corporate practice of medicine and fee-splitting laws, and structuring complex healthcare arrangements. My cybersecurity and privacy work mainly focuses on HIPAA compliance, including the privacy, security and governance of big data (e.g, electronic health records) in the healthcare industry. This work includes conducting privacy and data security diligence in healthcare transactions, structuring complex telemedicine arrangements, and assisting healthcare facilities and other industry stakeholders with data breach and security incident responses. I am currently expanding my interests in this area to blockchain and artificial intelligence.I graduated from Duke University School of Law. I chose to focus on healthcare law because of the importance and effect it has on every single person\'s individual life. I entered law school after spending a couple years in east Africa, researching and working in Uganda and Tanzania. I focused my undergraduate studies on anthropology, international development and political science, which led me to spend nearly a year studying aboard in Uganda focusing on post-conflict development. In turn, this led me to work for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Washington D.C. and in Tanzania before entering law school.Outside of work, I spend my time with my family (wife and kids) and enjoying the outdoors.
