About Elliot van Wie

I grew up in N.Y. and I\'ve lived in Hawaii for over a decade. Education wise, I studied a wide variety of social sciences and philosophy before getting a degree in political science and doing work in both future studies and urban regional planning. As a business consultant & connector I\'ve often worked in startup environments, helping companies get off of the ground, while building out their public face in web branding through copy as well as social media, reaching target audiences; I\'ve advertised, interviewed, negotiated salary with, contracted, trained and managed employees. As a community organizer either leading or working on a team in partnership with non-profit coalitions or on individual political campaigns, I have have also played a wide variety of roles. Initially, I worked on a multi-year Complete Streets campaign in Honolulu which involved building out a long-term strategy for its success and in garnering the support of key community stakeholders, working with non-profits, firms, elected officials and government departments. Eventually we passed legislation which as a consequence resulted in built infrastructure before I joined the board of a major non-profit (Sierra Club, for 5 years). Continuing on from there I worked on teams in myriad political campaigns and community campaigns. I planned events, published pieces, helped to craft legislation in non-profit coalitions and even designed or judged PAC questionnaires, eventually endorsing candidates, with purpose of forwarding organization goals. In my time doing this work, I recruited, coached and managed volunteers in performing various activities including: phone banking, canvassing and performing written or oral testimony; of course, I did these things many times myself, with the help of others, before I in turn helped others myself.
