SmileAge Initiative Trust is a registered charitable, non-profit organisation established for medical relief and the advancement of general public utility. SmileAge Initiative Trust aims to integrate oral health and literacy into India’s healthy ageing agenda. Our purpose is to promote oral and overall health through education, preventive care, research, and capacity building. We serve the public, with a particular focus on older adults, persons with disabilities, women and girls, rural communities and other underserved or vulnerable communities. Ensuring equitable access to knowledge and services that support healthy ageing and wellbeing for those most in need. Oral health is a foundational yet often overlooked component of healthy ageing and Universal Health Coverage (UHC). Oral diseases such as dental caries, periodontal disease, oral cancers, and tooth loss are among the most prevalent non-communicable conditions globally and disproportionately affect older adults, persons with disabilities, and underserved communities. Despite their high burden, these conditions are largely preventable through early literacy, behavioral change, and timely preventive care. The ability of individuals and communities to access, understand and use information to take control over their health is oral health literacy at its core. This is essential to achieve equitable health outcomes. Individuals experiencing poor oral health literacy are linked to delayed care-seeking, inappropriate practices, poor dietary habits, social isolation and reduced quality of life, especially in older age. Furthermore, it also exacerbates health conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, respiratory infections, and frailty, increasing healthcare costs and strain on health systems. Our vision is “To create an India where every older adult—regardless of income, location, or ability—has the knowledge, tools, and access to maintain a healthy mouth and a dignified life.”
