ABOUT ELISA WALKER

So, how does a J.D. with a B.A. in political science end up in the International & Transaction Tax practice of an accounting firm? For me, it started with a legislative internship with the Florida Senate during my senior year of undergrad. That internship was filled with a lot of late nights analyzing bills, followed by long days listening to the senators debate their merits in tightly packed committee rooms. Having the opportunity to build public policy from scratch ultimately inspired my journey through law school.Years later, as I was working through a complicated Subpart F issue during an international tax exam, the pieces clicked together. Tax law juxtaposes my favorite things: public policy, statutory analysis, economics, and puzzles. When EY offered me my first tax position, I was positively over the moon. At EY, I learned the basics of tax accounting and Excel, how to effectively communicate with my CPA colleagues, and how to serve my corporate clients. Because of my J.D. and experience, I was also given the opportunity to work with our national practice. During the implementation of the TCJA, I assisted with our firm’s statutory analysis of the new provisions in the Code and drafted white papers on their implications for our clients. Most recently, I’ve worked on supply chain and operating model effectiveness projects in light of BEAT and assessed our clients’ ability to take an MLTN position after Altera was reissued by the 9th Circuit. As much as I love the work, the culture of tax practitioners is an equally important selling point for me. I spend as much time as I can learning from more experienced practitioners in the tax community. To that end, I’m actively involved in the local Miami Women in Tax Association, and was recently named a 20••••20 fellow of the Tax Section of the Florida Bar.When I’m not writing, modeling, or out at a tax conference, you can usually find my fiancé and me hanging out in the Florida Keys.
