ABOUT ELIS OWENS
I am an experienced microbiologist with a background in food safety, brewing microbiology, brewing science, HACCP and fungal ecology. I aim to develop new cleaning formulations and antimicrobial interventions for food plants and meat and produce processors.I lead Birko’s Technical Services group which supports the protein, brew, produce and further processing industries. My expert team touches every aspect of research and development, quality assurance, regulatory compliance and customer education and support. It’s my goal to be the go-to resource for our customers.I am a frequent guest speaker, a presenter at PMA, BIFSCo and NAMI and an instructor at the UC Davis Post Harvest Workshop and various Pacific Northwest Horticultural Council events.After earning a Ph.D. from Cardiff University, I conducted postdoctoral research at Michigan State University’s Center for Microbial Ecology. My favorite title is bonafide brew expert – I am the proud owner of a brewing science diploma from the American Brewers Guild and a FSMA Preventive Controls qualification.
