For two decades, we have, as society, obsessed over CO₂ metrics and emission reductions. Yet the climate crisis continues. Why? Because we’re just solving one problem instead of addressing other equally important problems: how we increase carbon circulation, and reduce the dependency of fossil carbon.I’m a strategist, founder, and executive with 20+ years across bioindustries, digital transformation, and management consulting — now focused on one urgent mission: reducing our dependency on fossil carbon by accelerating carbon circulation. Eliminating carbon entirely is unrealistic. Equally naive is the idea that all fossil carbon can be seamlessly replaced by renewables. What we need is a fundamental industry shift: one built on the circulation of carbon — supported by policies that track and shape carbon flow across its physical forms, not just gas emissions.Today’s strategies remain stuck in part-optimizations. Fossil-based materials still dominate global value chains. Meanwhile, large volumes of bio-based and cycled carbon are locked into traditional industrial-era applications like pulp, paper, and packaging. Why are we still channeling high-value Nordic forest biomass into single-use, low-value products like toilet paper? It’s time to rethink resource value — to see more than just timber in the forest. Our forests hold the potential for thousands of yet-to-be-invented, renewable carbon-based applications. I advocate a shift: from emissions management to closing the carbon loop — a transformation that will reduce fossil inputs across the entire system. This is not only a technical challenge; it’s a leadership vacuum. Finland has a legacy of leading in the biomass value chain (asset, resource, raw material, technology) — but lacks a coordinated research front addressing renewable carbon’s systemic role. This is not just a scientific or environmental issue.
