I am a longtime journalist, a licensed clinical social worker and author of the memoir,\"Smacked: A Story of White-Collar Ambition, Addiction and Tragedy,\" published in February 2020 by Penguin Random House.(Learn more about Smacked at As a journalist for more than three decades I have covered the job market, careers, startups, entrepreneurship and technology for The New York Times and other publications. I wrote the \"Career Couch\" column in the The Times\' Sunday Business section for six years, and wrote the digital columns \"Start\" and \"Tech Support\" for two years. I have written for The Washington Post, The Atlantic, The Guardian, Harpers, The San Francisco Chronicle, Fortune Small Business, CNN, The Christian Science Monitor, Glamour Magazine, Real Simple, Psychology Today and many other national publications. I am now a regular contributor to The Times\' Special Sections. In 2017, I went to graduate school for a masters degree in social work and added clinical social worker to my resume. In addition to writing, I work part time as an ER social worker and maintain a small private practice.
