About Elba Serrano
Elba Serrano is a neuroscientist and Regents Professor whose leadership has advanced STEM education and research capacity nationwide. As founding Principal Investigator of the NSF National STEM Resource Hub she built national networks supporting Hispanic-serving institutions and created professional development opportunities for faculty across the United States.Her biomedical research centers on neuroglia, sensory disorders of hearing and balance, and biomechanics. Since 1991, her work has been continuously fundedby the National Institutes of Health, NASA, the National Science Foundation, and the Whitehall Foundation. She earned her Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Stanford University, specializing in neuroscience and biophysics, and graduated with distinction in Physics from the University of Rochester.A recognized advocate for interdisciplinary research and STEM workforce development, she directed two NIH-funded programs at NMSU—RISE (2008–2018) and BP-ENDURE BRAiN (2010–present)—and has taught courses, workshops, and lectures on science, ethics, and society for more than two decades. Her national service includes leadership and advisory roles with ABRCMS, the NIDCD Council, the CINT Users Advisory Board, the Society for Neuroscience, the NIH Director’s Advisory Committee, and the Trans-NIH BRAIN Initiative Working Group.
