ABOUT EDWARD ZIMMERMANN
A technology pioneer with over two decades of leadership experience spanning systems engineering, AI/ML, and data analytics across global markets. As founder and CTO of a German system house and data center, I served clients across five continents—from UN agencies and multinationals to independent creators—while helping establish Germany\'s early internet infrastructure. My work bridges commercial consulting and public research, with 15+ years focused on computer vision, NLP, and information retrieval through EU and German-funded projects. Recent initiatives include developing advanced dense passage retrieval solutions for RAG applications and mentoring AI startups. I contribute actively to international IT standards bodies, including the European Observatory for ICT Standardization, and teach intensive courses to PhD-level researchers. My interdisciplinary foundation encompasses economics, analytical chemistry, cybernetics, and software engineering, enabling me to deliver data-driven solutions across diverse sectors including manufacturing, medicaldiagnostics, robotics, and IoT.My technology career began in the ARPAnet era, where as a schoolboy I worked under LeonardKleinrock exploring distributed parallel computing architectures. Through the 1980s, I developedeconomic simulation models in Stockholm (EFI/Stockholm School of Economics) with Brita Schwarz and Berlin (WZB/IIVG) under Karl Deutsch, progressing to market predictive modeling and AI-driven capital life insurance evaluation systems. This work led me in 1991-92 to develop smart Internet tablets for the insurance sector, positioning me among Germany\'s first ISP pioneers and early adopters. As a Sun Microsystems VAR, I built a system house serving government agencies, EU institutions, US Federal and State entities, and research initiatives including CIHEAM projects across the Mediterranean region. I maintained active involvement in open source development throughout this period. After two decades leading my system house, I expanded into new domains that rekindled my earlier interest in neural networks and computer vision. Acquiring my first GPGPU—an NVIDIA Tesla K20—in 2013 marked my return to machine learning. In 2020 I re-rebooted my IB engine as Open Source through a grant from EU’s NGI0. It’s currently being extended to support embedding— through another NGI0 grant— for use as a hybrid engine.
