ABOUT EDWARD LEIGH

I have just started as the Senior Transport Officer at North Herts Council, and look forward to working with colleagues in planning, parking and infrastructure at North Herts and in transport at Hertfordshire County Council to deliver sustainable transport options and change transport behaviours in new and existing settlements in the district.Previously I was a consultant and business executive, with six years’ experience in shaping transport policy, over 30 years’ experience in IT, and over 20 years running businesses in marketing and events, web development and software licensing. I have founded and run several businesses and voluntary organisations. In 2019 I completed an MSc in Transport Economics at Leeds Institute for Transport Studies. I founded and led Smarter Cambridge Transport from 2015, an influential community think tank and campaign group. Until recently, I wrote a weekly column on transport for the Cambridge Independent newspaper.Outside of work, I chair the Cambridgeshire Police and Crime Panel, a local government scrutiny committee. I contribute to the Cambridge Past, Present and Future planning committee and the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Climate Action Coalition. I am very keen to accelerate action on decarbonisation. In particular, I would like to assist the use of deliberative democracy to develop popular and political understanding and support for a national road user charge to replace fuel duty in the UK, a subject on which I have provided written and oral evidence to the House of Commons Transport Committee.
