I\'m a journalist and author of 17 nonfiction books. My most recent is,\"Total Garbage: How We Can Fix Our Waste and Heal Our World,\" from Avery Books. My previous works include the bestselling \"Mississippi Mud,\"\"The Forever Witness: How DNA and Genealogy Solved a Cold Case Double Murder,\"\"No Matter How Loud I Shout: A Year in the Life of Juvenile Court,\" and \"Garbology: Our Dirty Love Affair With Trash,” a popular community and campus \"One Book\" selection. I have taught narrative nonfiction at the University of Southern California and Chapman University, and I\'m a speaker and lecturer represented by Penguin Random House Speakers Bureau. My work has appeared in The Atlantic, Wired, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles Magazine, Sierra, and other publications. My writing - a mix of narrative nonfiction, immersion journalism, and investigative reporting for newspapers, magazines and books - has received the Pulitzer Prize for Specialized Reporting. Other honors include a PEN Award for Research Nonfiction, a Casey Medal for Public Service, and a Best Book Award from Investigative Reporters and Editors. I live in Southern California.
